Last month, things went seriously wrong around the home match between AZ and Legia. An hour after the match, two footballers from Legia were arrested after a confrontation with the Dutch riot police outside the stadium.
The aftermath was intense: Legia attacked AZ and the Dutch authorities in a statement and even released a documentary about the events in Alkmaar. UEFA punished the Polish club with a monetary fine and an away match without fans.
Therefore, AZ will also play without away fans in Poland, but on their own initiative. The club reports that there has been extensive consultation with all relevant parties and the conclusion was drawn that the safety of AZ supporters cannot be guaranteed in Poland. Hence, no tickets will be sold for the away match in December. AZ advises fans against traveling to the match on their own.
This news from Alkmaar follows a day after Ajax announced that no fans would be allowed at the away match against Olympique Marseille, as ordered by the local authorities in the French port city.
