Geraerts made headlines last year with the successful team Union Saint-Gilloise. The coach reached the quarterfinals of the Europa League and missed out on the national title on the final day of the Jupiler League. This summer, Geraerts and Union could not agree on an improved contract, after which the 41-year-old former footballer from, among others, Standard Liège and Club Brugge was left without a club.

In the press conference, the Belgian coach indicates that he is a coach who wants to play neat, constructive football and that he wants to bring back the 'winner's mentality' to Schalke. 'Only then can you look upwards in the standings. I do not dare to predict what final position will be attached to it. We will do it step by step and let the past be the past.'

The Belgian has signed a contract in Gelsenkirchen until the summer of 2025. At Schalke, Geraerts succeeds Thomas Reis, who was dismissed at the end of September due to disappointing results. Last weekend, Schalke lost at home to Hertha BSC. It ended 1-2 in the Veltins-Arena.
