In their own home, Porto was heading towards a defeat after Arouca took the lead through Cristo González in the 84th minute.

However, the home team didn't give up and launched a late offensive. It seemed to pay off when referee Miguel Nogueira pointed to the penalty spot for a foul on Mehdi Taremi. Before the penalty could be taken, the referee was summoned to the VAR screen.

There was one problem when Nogueira arrived on the sideline: the VAR screen was not working. The referee was then handed a phone to establish communication with the VAR. Nogueira couldn't see the video footage himself and relied on the judgment of the video assistant referee, who deemed it not worthy of a penalty. Thus, the penalty was canceled.

Meanwhile, the ninety minutes had already elapsed. Once the game resumed, the officials announced that a whopping seventeen minutes of added time would be played. During that added time, Nogueira pointed to the penalty spot again for a foul on Taremi. This penalty stood, but Galeno's shot was saved by Arouca's goalkeeper. The game continued, and eventually, Porto equalized 1-1 in the nineteenth minute of added time through Evanilson.

After the 1-1, play continued for a little while longer, and the match was finally ended after 22 minutes of added time. Porto managed to secure a point, but they were not pleased with the officiating. The club argued that the result should be declared null and void because the referee didn't have access to the footage when assessing the first penalty incident. Porto also mentioned 'misconduct by the refereeing team.' Additionally, their rival Benfica, led by coach Roger Schmidt, questioned the extremely long added time.
