De Jong was head coach of the club from Leeuwarden between 2014 and 2016 and also from 2019 to 2022. In 2013, he was also a brief and successful interim coach following the dismissal of Alfons Arts.

Due to health reasons, De Jong had to step down in 2022. The Frisian had a cyst in his head, which was successfully operated on at the beginning of 2023. He did remain under contract with Cambuur, which made a return easier.

The 59-year-old coach must lead Cambuur back to the Eredivisie. He previously did so in 2013 (as interim head coach) and in 2021. Currently, the Frisian club is eleventh in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, with thirteen points from nine matches. Technical director Etiënne Reijnen: 'This will not be a surprise to anyone and it is indeed very logical that we, as a club, end up with the most successful head coach in the club's history. Moreover, Henk is available, is still under contract with the club, and is also eager to get back to work.'
