Pepe posted a tweet with a circus tent and five clown emojis. The veteran, who didn't play due to an injury, evidently disagreed with referee João Pinheiro's decision to send off Fábio Cardoso after only nineteen minutes. With a man down, FC Porto lost 1-0 to Benfica due to a goal by Ángel Di María in the 68th minute.

After the match, there was a lot of criticism of Pinheiro from the FC Porto camp, but Pepe took it to the extreme. According to Portuguese media, the Portuguese Referees' Committee is now investigating whether the former Real Madrid player can be punished for his post. The maximum penalty would be a four-game suspension.

Due to injury problems, Pepe has only played two league matches this season. He is also a major doubt for Wednesday's Champions League clash with FC Barcelona.
