Given the so far disastrous first half of the season, there is a very high chance that Ajax will strengthen its squad in the upcoming transfer period. Mike Verweij also expects the Amsterdam club to enter the market.

“Ajax wants to sign a controlling midfielder and ideally, the club also wants someone for the right-wing position, but the controlling midfielder is the top priority,” the club watcher reveals on Friday evening in the Kick-Off podcast.

For the position of controlling midfielder, among others, the name of Højbjerg, who was already in Ajax's sights in 2022, came up. However, the 28-year-old midfielder proved unattainable and his transfer is now non-negotiable. Tottenham Hotspur reportedly demands a sum of more than twenty million euros for the midfielder, where Ajax will first have to sell players before it can make new signings in the upcoming transfer period.

Højbjerg joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2013. However, the Danish international failed to break through at der Rekordmeister and was eventually sold to Southampton for fifteen million euros, where he played for four seasons. Højbjerg was bought by Tottenham in the summer of 2020 for 16.6 million euros and currently has a contract with them until mid-2025. His current estimated transfer value is as high as 42 million euros.
