Defeated at home by Las Palmas (1-2) on Saturday, Hansi Flick reflected on a difficult November that "cost" Barcelona valuable points in the LaLiga title race.
The month saw Barcelona struggle, with a draw against Celta de Vigo (1-1) and a loss away to Real Sociedad (0-1) in addition to the latest setback against Las Palmas. These results have allowed their closest rivals, including Real Madrid, to close the gap at the top of the table, intensifying the competition as the league approaches its halfway mark.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Barcelona’s next match, an away fixture against Mallorca on Tuesday at 6:00 PM, Flick acknowledged the challenges his team faced in recent weeks. He expressed disappointment over the team’s inability to convert their dominance into victories and emphasized the need for improvement, particularly in finishing chances and defensive organization. Despite these setbacks, the German coach remains optimistic about Barcelona’s prospects and reaffirmed that winning LaLiga remains the club’s primary objective this season.
"The good thing is that November is over, and we are already in December," Flick said. "The team gave a lot. We had intensity in midfield, we dominated, and we created chances. But if we don’t capitalize on those opportunities, it’s tough to win. We have to learn we’re the youngest team in the league, and there’s still a lot of room for growth. Goals are conceded, but everyone needs to defend as a unit and attack together. Las Palmas were more efficient, conceding fewer goals, and we must learn to seize our opportunities and strengthen our defensive structure."
Barcelona’s struggles in November have highlighted some recurring issues, particularly their lack of consistency in front of goal and defensive vulnerabilities during crucial moments. While Flick praised the team’s ability to control possession and dictate the flow of the game, he stressed the importance of transitioning from dominance to decisive action. "We had long spells of possession and plenty of chances, but in the end, football is a battle. It’s about duels, and the desire to defend is critical. Everyone must give their best," he stated.
Reflecting on the team's broader goals, Flick noted the challenges of competing in a highly demanding league with a young squad. "We started the season very well, but November cost us. I hope December will be different. LaLiga is a long journey, and we want to win the title. Barcelona is an incredible club, and I want to see everyone fighting for our goals. If we don’t succeed this year, perhaps next season we’ll be stronger. Everyone here understands our situation with so many young players. I enjoy working with them there’s a great mentality and team spirit in the dressing room. We have to keep pushing forward," he added.
Barcelona's position at the top of the table remains precarious. Currently leading LaLiga after 15 rounds with 34 points, they could be overtaken by Real Madrid, who sit in second with 33 points and a game in hand. This creates additional pressure for Flick’s side, as a misstep in their upcoming matches could see them lose their grip on the lead. Tuesday’s clash against Mallorca, a team currently sitting sixth in the standings with 24 points, poses another tough challenge. Mallorca has proven to be a formidable opponent this season, especially at home, where they have consistently secured strong results.
Flick’s emphasis on team cohesion and growth reflects his commitment to developing Barcelona’s young squad into a competitive force. While setbacks in November have dampened momentum, the coach believes in the team’s potential to bounce back. As Barcelona enters December, the focus is not only on maintaining their lead in LaLiga but also on building the resilience and unity required to achieve their long-term goals.
The match against Mallorca will serve as a crucial test for Barcelona’s ability to respond under pressure. A strong performance and victory could restore confidence and set the tone for the rest of the month. With Flick at the helm and the young squad eager to prove themselves, Barcelona’s journey in LaLiga remains one to watch, as they aim to solidify their place at the summit and reclaim their status as champions.
