Last month, Juventus made a bold move by appointing Igor Tudor as head coach following the dismissal of Thiago Motta.

The decision came at a critical juncture in the season, with Juventus still in contention for a top-four finish but showing signs of inconsistency under Motta’s leadership. One of the more debated aspects of Motta’s final weeks in charge was his exclusion of Teun Koopmeiners from the starting lineup a player who had arrived in Turin with high hopes and a hefty €55 million price tag from Atalanta Bergamo. Many had begun to question whether the Dutch midfielder would ever fulfil his potential at the club.

Tudor, however, saw things differently. From the moment he took over, the Croatian manager made it clear that he believed in Koopmeiners’ qualities particularly his ability to link midfield and attack, his tactical intelligence, and his composure under pressure. Against Lecce on Saturday evening, that belief was vindicated in emphatic fashion. Juventus earned a solid 2-1 home victory at the Allianz Stadium, and Koopmeiners was central to the performance from the very first whistle.

Only two minutes into the game, Juventus struck with clinical efficiency. Dusan Vlahovic, often criticised this season for his inconsistency, played a perfectly weighted pass through the Lecce back line. Koopmeiners timed his run to perfection, latched onto the ball, and finished coolly with a low drive into the far corner. It was a composed and technically excellent strike one that not only gave Juve the early lead but also seemed to lift the entire team’s confidence.

The goal changed the tempo of the match. Juventus began to play with greater rhythm and fluidity, dominating possession and applying sustained pressure on Lecce’s defence. Tudor’s tactical approach was clear: aggressive pressing high up the pitch, quick ball circulation, and direct transitions through the central channels something that had been missing under Motta’s more cautious setup.

Dusan Vlahovic, in particular, seemed to thrive under these conditions. After assisting the opener, he once again found space down the right and delivered a sharp pass across the box for 18-year-old Kenan Yildiz, who calmly slotted home to make it 2-0. It marked a rare moment for Vlahovic, who for the first time since his arrival in Serie A in 2018, recorded more than one assist in a single match  a stat that reflects a growing maturity and willingness to contribute beyond goals.

Throughout the first half, Juventus looked in control. Lecce had few answers to the hosts’ intensity and struggled to create any meaningful opportunities. Koopmeiners, alongside Manuel Locatelli in midfield, was dictating the tempo and recycling possession efficiently. Federico Gatti and Bremer were solid at the back, while Filip Kostić provided width and energy on the left.

In the second half, Juventus appeared content to manage the lead, lowering the tempo slightly and focusing on maintaining compactness and discipline. Lecce, meanwhile, began to push forward in search of a way back into the game, but struggled to break down a well-organised Juventus block. Their best efforts came from set pieces and speculative efforts from distance, most of which were dealt with comfortably by Wojciech Szczęsny.

However, with just a few minutes remaining, Juventus allowed a lapse in concentration. A corner from the left was not properly cleared, and Federico Baschirotto pounced inside the box, steering the ball past Szczęsny to make it 2-1. The goal gave Lecce hope, but time was not on their side. Juventus managed the final minutes with calm, running down the clock and denying Lecce any further clear opportunities.

While the win was a vital one in terms of league position Juventus now sit third in the Serie A table with 59 points from 32 matches it was not without its concerns. Midway through the second half, Teun Koopmeiners signaled to the bench and was withdrawn with what appeared to be a muscle problem. The midfielder’s facial expression suggested discomfort, and although the club has yet to confirm the severity of the injury, it will certainly be a concern for Tudor and the Juventus medical staff, especially given his growing influence in the team.

Overall, though, it was a positive evening for Juventus, who showed structure, intent, and clarity hallmarks of Tudor’s early impact. The win tightens their grip on a Champions League place and offers renewed optimism heading into the final stretch of the season. With players like Vlahovic regaining form and Koopmeiners finally finding his rhythm, the signs are encouraging for the Bianconeri. The challenge now will be to maintain consistency and keep key players fit for the decisive matches ahead.
