Laporta reveals: 'We could have sold Frenkie de Jong for one hundred million'

The atmosphere was at times emotional and heated during Saturday afternoon's general assembly at Barcelona, where the fiscal year 2022/23 was concluded. The members overwhelmingly approved the financial statements, although there were some critics present.

One of them was Jaume Llopis, who has served as a director at Barcelona in the past and contributed to the Camp Nou renovation project. He asked critical questions to President Joan Laporta and Vice President Eduard Romeu, who is responsible for finance. However, Laporta did not appreciate Llopis's attitude.

'You have an economic background, so there is no need to play games here,' Laporta said. 'You don’t need to proclaim your opinion so arrogantly. We are living in reality, not in a fictional world. It does not help us when you pit other Barça fans against us. I suggest you tone it down. This kind of demagoguery hurts me.'

Llopis believed that Barcelona is not being honest about its finances and that the club received far too little money for Barça Vision, a platform that capitalizes on new forms of digital business. 'But he knows that things have been improving here since we came on board,' Laporta continued. 'We will once again see the best Barcelona ever, and that causes panic among our rivals.'

'But we cannot improve our sporting performance if our financial affairs are not in order,' the Barça president went on. 'We had the opportunity to sell Frenkie de Jong for one hundred million euros, but we did not do it. We did not want to reduce our chances of being competitive. Mr. Llopis looks at the situation catastrophically, while I am being realistic. Let’s stop trying to throw a wrench in the works; let’s work together to get better.'
