Lyon terminates Nemanja Matic’s contract shortly after controversy over covering rainbow flag

On May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia, all Ligue 1 players took to the pitch wearing shirts featuring a special anti-discrimination logo.

The design included the rainbow flag prominently displayed on the sleeve, symbolising solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and promoting inclusivity in football. The initiative, coordinated by Ligue 1 organiser LFP, was part of a broader campaign to raise awareness and show unity across French football.

However, Nemanja Matic, the experienced Serbian midfielder for Olympique Lyonnais, attracted significant controversy when he was spotted covering the rainbow flag on his sleeve with a piece of tape during the match. The act was interpreted by many as a public rejection of the symbol, sparking a heated debate in the French media and among supporters. For the LFP, the gesture directly undermined the campaign’s message. As a result, Matic was handed a two-match suspension, a punishment that also fell upon Le Havre’s Ahmed Hassan, who had done the same.
