Sancho came under scrutiny last week after openly criticizing his manager, Erik ten Hag. The Englishman was not included in the Manchester United squad due to reportedly poor training, and Sancho took to social media to express that he had been the 'scapegoat' for a while. Speaking on BBC Radio 5, Schmeichel expressed his astonishment at this reaction. 'Under Ferguson, Sancho wouldn't have had a second chance.'
'He's a player who was brought in for a high fee and hasn't performed,' Schmeichel continued. 'And it's not the first issue the club has had with him. Alex (Ferguson, editor's note) would have put a stop to it a long time ago. Nowadays, it's different, of course. But I don't like players who speak out against the manager.'
The Dane is particularly concerned for Ten Hag and the team dynamics. 'When we talk about Manchester United, we're talking about something unrelated to football. That's very unfortunate. It's always about something else. The club has that global appeal, but we would like it to be primarily about football most of the time.'
