Last summer, Jordan Henderson left Liverpool after twelve seasons. This created a vacancy for the captain of Liverpool. Jürgen Klopp appointed Van Dijk as his new captain. The defender has chosen to approach the match preparation slightly differently.
At Van Dijk's insistence, Liverpool conducts a huddle shortly before the game. In it, the players stand in a circle to pump each other up one more time. 'We always did that at Celtic as well, and I have had good experiences with it,' Van Dijk shared in The Overlap. 'It sets the tone for the game, and it also sends a signal to the audience that we are ready.'
'It also benefits the atmosphere, because it is so close to the start of the game. So if our fans want to join in, they are definitely welcome to do so.' Van Dijk is proud to be the new captain of Liverpool. 'This club has had incredible captains over the years. Leaders who time and time again were able to bring out the best in themselves and in the team. So to be listed alongside such people, I absolutely did not expect when I started playing football.'
