Wandering Premier League club already thinking about the winter break

Despite Santiago Giménez having recently signed a new contract with Feyenoord, the club appears to be bracing for a swift departure of the Mexican. Giménez was already linked with a move to a top European league last summer but remained loyal to Feyenoord. This could change during the winter break if Chelsea expresses interest in Rotterdam.

The Londoners had a highly disappointing season. Despite investing hundreds of millions of euros in new players, they finished eleventh in the Premier League and were decisively knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid. A significant portion of the squad underwent changes during the summer.

Chelsea once again opened their wallets in hopes of competing for trophies this season, but the start has been far from promising. The Blues have only managed to secure four points from the first four league matches and once again find themselves in the lower half of the table.

The season may have only just begun a few weeks ago, and the transfer market closed not long ago, but Chelsea is already scouting for winter reinforcements. Giménez is one of the names on the list to bolster the squad in January, as reported by journalist Graeme Bailey. However, according to the reporter, who writes for outlets such as 90min, Giménez is not at the top of the wishlist. Ivan Toney, currently under contract with Brentford, is the number one target.

Feyenoord director Dennis te Kloese commented on Giménez's future last week in an interview with De Telegraaf. He doesn't seem inclined to sell the Mexican during the winter break. 'Deep down, I hope he plays for us for several more years. But the next summer transfer window could be a period where even bigger clubs may come knocking,' Te Kloese said.

Champions League

Giménez made the switch from CD Cruz Azul to Feyenoord last year, with the Rotterdam club paying six million euros for his arrival. It would be surprising if Giménez doesn't fetch a record amount for Feyenoord in the future. He has worn the Stadionclub's shirt fifty times to date, scoring 28 goals and providing three assists. This season, he has already found the net five times in four league matches. Giménez will soon have the opportunity to showcase his skills in the Champions League, although he will miss the first two group-stage matches due to his red card in last season's Europa League quarter-final against AS Roma.
